First arrest under new Hong Kong security law: man …

Hong Kong police arrested a man who held a Hong Kong independence flag. He is the first person to be arrested under China’s new national security law for the city, police said Wednesday.

In photos posted by the police on Twitter, there was a flag on the sidewalk in front of a man in a black T-shirt that said ‘Hong Kong Independence’.

The controversial new Hong Kong security law passed by the People’s Congress of China lays down severe penalties for terrorism, undermining central authority, striving for independence and collusion with foreign forces.

The law went into effect on Tuesday and applies to residents of Hong Kong as well as those staying there temporarily.

In addition, dozens of people were arrested in protests on Wednesday. Police used water cannons to disperse protesters.

It was 23 years ago on Wednesday that the former British colony was transferred to China from London. Like every year, thousands of people gathered to reflect on this and demonstrate against the new law. Slogans such as “resistance to the end” and “Hong Kong independent” were chanted. On Monday, the government announced that it would deploy thousands of police officers against the protesters.
