First and last TV duel De Jonge and Omtzigt to lead CDA | Inland

De Jonge received the support of many CDA leaders and seemed to have almost won the party leadership, but Omtzigt offered so much resistance that a second round was needed. If Omtzigt wins, he wants to put Minister Hoekstra (Finance) forward as a figurehead in the cabinet.

Baudet or Marijnissen

One of the dilemmas presented to the two politicians during the debate was whether to opt for a collaboration with Thierry Baudet or Lilian Marijnissen.

Omtzigt chose Marijnissen, because he had worked well with SP MP Leijten in exposing the allowance affair. „I am not so excluded. But I see how Baudet has spoken about the CDA and that means that no cooperation is possible. ”

De Jonge chose neither, but reiterated his view that the CDA under his leadership will never work with the Forum for Democracy. “We gained experience with the PVV a few years ago. Endless hassle. Endless fun. We shouldn’t do it again. ”

Migration

The first point of the debate was about migration, introduced by De Jonge. “Migration is something that happens to us and that is unwise,” said the Deputy Prime Minister. He believes that there should be an annual target for the number of labor migrants.

Omtzigt still does not see how migration from EU countries can be stricter. “The Polish government is also critical of how we house Polish migrants, and sometimes they have a point.”

For the orphans in Greece, De Jonge advocates a joint European asylum policy. “It’s too much for everyone now. The Netherlands cannot do this on its own. ” Omtzigt supported the government’s position that the children should be cared for in the region with financial support from the Netherlands. “A clear agreement has been made to look after these children on the Greek mainland. I will make sure that the agreements are also kept. That seems to be difficult. “

Unreliable government

Another point that was discussed was the reliability of the government and, among other things, the surcharge affair with the tax authorities. In doing so, Omtzigt exploited his position as a Member of Parliament, while Minister De Jonge was accountable for cabinet policy. Omtzigt was also able to highlight the key point of his campaign that citizens deserve better protection against an often unreliable government. According to De Jonge, the statement that ‘the government’ as a whole is unreliable went a long way. “You can certainly say that at the tax authorities. But the government is also the woman behind the counter that we do not offer enough space to provide customization. ”

The digital ballot box closes at noon on Tuesday afternoon. The results will be announced a day later.
