First Aid If You Get Malaria, Know the Symptoms

TEMPO.CO, JakartaMalaria is an infectious disease that can be transmitted through mosquito bites. Sufferers will complain of symptoms of fever and chills. The number of malaria sufferers in Indonesia tends to decrease, but some areas in eastern Indonesia still suffer from malaria.

Malaria disease can recover completely if treated properly. However, if not treated immediately, this disease can be fatal. Malaria can even cause kidney failure, severe anemia, and even death.

Symptoms of malaria appear at least 10 to 15 days after being bitten by an infected or infected Anopheles mosquito. Launching from the Soewandhi Hospital Surabaya canal, the symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Shivering
  • Headache
  • Sweat a lot
  • Weak
  • Sore
  • Symptoms of anemia or lack of blood
  • Nausea or vomiting

The first treatment that must be done after a person feels symptoms of malaria is to perform a physical examination and instant diagnostic tests through RDT (Rapid Diagnostic Test). RDT is able to detect the presence and type of parasite that causes malaria. The results of the RDT are also important in determining the type of antimalarial treatment given to the patient.

Malaria Patient Treatment

Treatment is given according to the type of malaria, the severity of the symptoms, and the patient’s condition. Treatment for mild malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax sufferers will be given outpatient drugs in the form of ACT or chloroquine. To prevent malaria recurrence, patients will be provided with the drug primaquine.

Meanwhile, for the type of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum with moderate degree of symptoms, the patient will be treated in a non-ICU room. Meanwhile, patients with severe symptoms will be treated in the ICU and given medication by injection for the first 24 hours.

Quoting from the CDC, a person can contract malaria when visiting an area where there are still a lot of malaria sufferers. In fact, a mother infected with malaria can pass malaria to her baby before or during delivery.

To prevent malaria, you need to clean the dirty and slum areas of the place malaria mosquito nesting. You can do various other tips, such as using mosquito nets while sleeping, avoiding putting wet and dirty clothes, and doing the 3M steps (Draining water reservoirs, Burying used items, and Recycling used items).
