Fireworks industry fears increase in use of illegal fireworks due to ban | NOW

Fireworks association BPN is not happy with the fireworks ban for next New Year’s Eve. Chairman Marcel Teunissen reported this on Friday in a response to it decision of the cabinet. Not only does he fear a loss of sales for sellers, he also fears that some consumers will turn to illegal fireworks, which may increase the risk of injury.

On Friday, the cabinet announced that no fireworks may be set off across the country at the upcoming turn of the year. “Of course we are not overjoyed. The cabinet actually says: you are not allowed to do your job,” said Teunissen.

The measure will be introduced to reduce the pressure on care during the turn of the year. But Teunissen doubts whether the ban will not have the opposite effect.

“We are afraid that due to the ban some fireworks enthusiasts will seize illegal fireworks,” said the BPN chairman. And according to him, the same safety standards are often not used, so the number of injuries may be higher than without the fireworks ban.

In recent times, many consumers have already ordered fireworks, which they cannot set off now. “There must be a solution, perhaps in the form of a voucher, as in the travel industry, or else the money must be returned.”

Sellers who have already purchased fireworks cannot return this to the supplier, according to Teunissen. However, there is the option to keep it until next year. “If you store fireworks in the right way, for example moisture-free, you can keep it for a year.”
