Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – A former member of the volunteer fire brigade is said to have started several fires in the Freiburg region. At the start of the trial in the local court on Monday, the 20-year-old made use of his right to remain silent, according to a court spokesman. He only commented on himself. At the age of 18, the man is said to have set fire to several buildings near Freiburg: for example a wood store, the tool shed of a football club and a vineyard. In the five cases of arson that the public prosecutor accuses the man, there was a property damage of more than 100,000 euros.
According to the spokesman, the taking of evidence should continue in court. The next hearing is July 26th.
It is not the only case in Baden-Württemberg in which firefighters are suspected of being alleged arsonists. In mid-June, for example, a fireman before the Heilbronn district court took responsibility for several acts after a series of arson attacks that had lasted for months.
