Fire on board production ship at Stord extinguished – NRK Vestland

There has been a fire in the production ship “Johan Castberg” which is docked at Aker Solutions in Stord.

– The fire has now been extinguished, and the fire service is on the scene to ensure that it does not flare up again, says Svein Nesse at the 110 central Sør-Vest.

The crew is reported to be 187 people, and everyone on board must be evacuated and accounted for.

– No injuries have been reported, says operations manager at Sør-West police district, Victor Fenne-Jensen.

There should not have been a risk of spread.

– The fire started a bit in the upper decks, and there was a lot of smoke coming out of it. Together with industrial protection, the fire was put down quite quickly, says the police’s incident leader, Fritz Arne Lilleskog.

The fire itself is not supposed to have been that big, but it led to heavy smoke on board.

High damage potential

The ship is a production ship that is typically loaded with process equipment, and is docked due to work on a hull.

Operations leader Lilleskog says that the damage potential of the fire meant that they moved out with large crews.

– It appears that there is minimal damage, and we are now investigating the cause of the fire. The fire itself didn’t seem that big, he says.

According to press contact at Aker Solutions, Odd Naustdal, the extent of the damage is unknown.

– We are now working to get an overview of the situation.
