Fine for skipper who caused enormous stern wave at Vlissingen beach

Ultimately, three people were taken to hospital for examination. The Belgian skipper was initially fined 1,250 euros, but did not pay it. The second mate did.

Bad preparation

The Belgian did not appear at the session this morning. “I find it incomprehensible that the man is in no way aware of his responsibility,” said the public prosecutor.

He accused the skipper, among other things, of having insufficiently prepared for the trip from Terneuzen via Vlissingen to the North Sea. Furthermore, the speed of the Belgian skipper was too high and he had not made contact with the ship that passed him.

The channel at Vlissingen is narrow and runs close to the beach, especially at low tide. A large container ship was still sailing six months ago almost on the beach.
