“Malcolm & Marie” starts on February 5, 2021 exclusively on Netflix. By then, at the latest, all subscribers will be able to get their own picture of the love drama in black and white, with the director Levinson retelling an episode of his own life.

Filmmaker Malcolm (John David Washington) was just at the premiere of his new film with his girlfriend Marie (Zendaya) – and is still completely blown away by the positive reaction from the audience. While he is waiting for the first official online reviews, the mood between Malcolm and Marie begins to get out of hand. And soon the two have to wonder whether their love will even get through the night.
Sam Levinson made the film, in which we actually don’t see any other actors than Washington and Zendaya, not only during the lockdown in 2020, but also processed a piece of his own history with it. Because his script is inspired by the night when his film “Assassination Nation” premiered – and he forgot to thank his wife Ashley during his big speech.
Strong cinema, but not a masterpiece
In the end, critics didn’t react to “Malcolm & Marie” quite as euphorically as in the very first reactions. – This also underlines the currently 59 percent positive reviews on the rating platform Rotten Tomatoes (As of February 3, 2021). Among other things, director Levinson is often accused of merely plucking a chuckle with the world of critics with his film. We think that there is more to his film – even if not a relationship film highlight like “Marriage Story” or “Pieces Of A Woman”.
