Finale Mondiali, the gesture of the Argentine goalkeeper on the podium

Awarded as the best full back of the tournament with a golden “big hand”, Emiliano Martinez indulges in a nasty vulgarity by placing the trophy right there

L’adrenaline of the moment, the great emotion for the victory and that sense of absolute freedom that only an amazing performance can give: it must have been a mix of these states of mind that invaded the Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez at the end of the match against France, which gave the Albiceleste national team its third world title.

Clouded from so much joy and omnipotence, the South American fullback – back, a few minutes before the awards ceremony at the end of the match, from a stratospheric save against Randal Kolo Muani and from the penalty intercepted on Kingsley Junior Coman – however he let himself go to a very inappropriate gesture and low-level: having received the award for best goalkeeper of the World Cup, a large golden glove, Martinez went towards the position for the photographs and, with a mocking laugh, stood the trophy in front of the pubisas if it were a large appendage.

A gesture that, perhaps, would have gone well inside the locker room, in an unbridled climate camaraderie but which certainly went out of tune in the world in front of millions of spectators and which certainly did not testify in favor of the Argentine goalkeeper, as the TV reporters immediately commented Alberto Remedy and Dario Di Gennaro.

Many underlined the bad episode, recalling the other occasion in which the South American blue-and-whites demonstrated a serious lack of style in the celebrations, when after the victory (always on penalties) against Netherlands some players have passed in front of their opponents by doing raspberries and gestures to the defeated. An unpleasant jargon that not even the 36-year wait since the last planetary title nor the great fear of France’s comeback can justify.
