Final Fantasy XIV Sales Delayed Due to ‘Too Sold’

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Square Enix reportedly temporarily suspends sales Final Fantasy XIV Starter and Complete editions for being ‘too good’.

This was done in an effort to reduce the server bottlenecks that have plagued the game since the release of the Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker expansion.

Game producer and director Naoki Yoshida wrote in a blog post that the company stopped shipping physical versions of the game, digital sales, and also suspended registration for the game’s free trial.

Endwalker was released to early audiences on December 3 and had an official release a few days later on December 7.

However, the limited server capacity makes players often have to wait for hours just to enter the game and get stuck in queues of more than four thousand to eight thousand other players.

Reported from The Verge, recently the game server even seemed to ‘collapse’ because it couldn’t bear the player’s burden.

Yoshida said the halt or suspension of sales would be gradual over the next few days, and apologized to potential customers and the company’s retail partners.

It added that the posting of new advertisements for the game was also discontinued.

Under normal circumstances, companies like Square Enix would try to fix this capacity issue by investing in new servers. But Final Fantasy XIV’s boom in popularity coincided with a global chip crisis that prevented Square Enix from buying new server hardware.

Yoshida explained that the company is “starting to see some progress” as it builds up its server capacity and said it hopes to find a way out in January 2022.

Furthermore, Yoshida expressed his apologies in early December for the ongoing problems and granted seven days to all players who own the full version of the game and have an active subscription.

Reported from Engadget, in his latest post, he said that Square Enix is now giving players an additional 14 days.

In addition to discontinuing the sale of FFXIV, the company will prioritize login for active subscribed players going forward. The company will no longer accept free trial subscriptions, and current free trial players will no longer be able to log in other than late at night and early in the morning.
