Filmmaker Alan Parker, director of Evita and the Midnight Express, has died

Alan Parker directed, for example, the Oscar-nominated films Midnight Express and Burning Mississippi and the film transcript of the musical Evita starring Madonna.

He was one of the most versatile British creators in his genre, whose filmography includes musical films (Glory, Pink Floyd: The Wall or Commitments), dramas (The Life of David Gale, Angel’s Ashes) and comedies (Shoot the Moon, Bugsy Malone).

The turning point in his career was the shooting of the successful prison drama Midnight Express (1978), for which he won a BAFTA award. He consolidated his position as a director of important topics with the anti-racist film Burning Mississippi (1988), which earned him an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination.

Parker’s diverse work is united by political and social involvement. He liked to comment on complex topics, whether it was the controversial death penalty in David Gale’s Life, the segregation of Americans of Japanese descent and their families during World War II in Visit Paradise, or the Vietnam War in Wings.
