Why does a mosquito bite itch?

Mosquitoes are attracted by body heat and the smell of sweat, among other things. The female mosquito needs blood in order to reproduce. If the mosquito stings, it secretes a secretion to prevent the blood from clotting. However, the immune system combats this secretion and releases histamines in the skin – which triggers the itching.

If the area is scratched, the secretion will spread and the allergic reaction will worsen. Skin irritations such as redness after a mosquito bite are normal. If the mosquito bite is scratched open, bacteria can enter and cause an infection.

Cold and warm

A tried and tested remedy for all kinds of insect bites is cooling. If the sting is reported, simply wrap a few ice cubes in a cloth or grab a cold pack and press on the spot. The cold soothes both the swelling and the uncomfortable itching.

But heat can also help: To do this, dip a spoon in a cup full of hot water. When the metal has warmed up, press the spoon into place for a few seconds. The mosquito secretion, which mainly consists of proteins, is brought to a halt. This has the effect that the body no longer recognizes the poison as such and there is no defense reaction.

Vinegar and onion

A well-known home remedy is the onion. It is not only an all-rounder with wasp stings, it is also a savior in times of need when it comes to mosquito bites. Simply cut off a slice and place it on the appropriate spot. The onion juice contains sulfur, which has an antibacterial effect. The onion also has a cooling effect.

Also helpful: vinegar. This also has a disinfectant effect and cools the area. Simply mix a little water with vinegar, soak a cloth in it and then press the appropriate area – the itching is forgotten.

Lemon and toothpaste

It sounds crazy, but it can help: toothpaste. It has essential oils that reduce the swelling. In addition, the contained menthol prevents inflammation. If the toothpaste is stored in the refrigerator, there is an additional cooling effect that alleviates the itching. Simply apply to the area and let it dry. Then wash off with lukewarm water.

Lemons can also help with insect bites. Press a washer onto the wound immediately after the stab. In addition to its anti-inflammatory properties, lemon juice cools the itchy area.

The last resort

If none of these home remedies work, harder means have to be used. There are some high-tech products on the market that curb the itch in seconds. In the so-called “stitch healer”, a contact surface is placed on the stitch that heats up to approx. 50 degrees. This “destroys” the poison, as with a hot spoon. While the process can be a little uncomfortable, it will help relieve the itching.
