Fighters from Tigray fire missiles at Eritrea: conflict in Ethiopia is now international

When they worked together in the 1970s and 1980s against the Marxist dictatorship of Mariam Mengistu in Ethiopia, that changed after Tigray took power there and Eritrea became independent. Especially between 1998 and 2000 there was a very bloody one border war between Tigray-led Ethiopia and Eritrea. However, after power in Ethiopia shifted from Tigray to current Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, that has changed.

Tigray is the northernmost province in Ethiopia and shares a long border with Eritrea. When the conflict flares up, Tigray’s troops are left to fight two fronts: in the north against Eritrea and in the south against the Ethiopian army and related militias. Regardless, the war now seems to be spreading beyond Ethiopia quite quickly.
