Over the past day, about fifty people tried to illegally cross border between Belarus and Poland.

This is reported Polish radio.

According to the Polish Border Service, near the village of Melnik, 18 people attempted to break through the border. Belarusian services helped the migrants.

People who had gathered on the Belarusian side of the border threw stones and branches at the Polish border guards; damaged the fence and tried to demolish metal poles.

The press secretary of the Border Service, Anna Mikhalskaya, said that people managed to break through the border, they were detained.

“None of them declared their desire to stay in Poland. Also, as a result of these events, no one was injured. These persons received official orders and were returned to the border line,” the spokeswoman said.

Among the detainees were citizens of Iraq, Syria and Egypt. In total, 47 people tried to illegally cross the border over the past day.

As Mikhalska added, in other places on the Polish-Belarusian border, near the villages of Ploska and Shudzyalovo, barriers were damaged. The Polish patrols saw that the Belarusian security forces were doing this, preparing a place for illegal border crossing.

This month, the border service recorded more than 400 attempts of illegal entry from Belarus into Poland. Last year there were 40,000 such attempts.

As UNIAN reported, since the end of May 2021, Belarus has been facilitating the illegal entry of migrants from crisis regions into the European Union through its territory. This is how Minsk reacted to the tightening of Western sanctions against Belarus.

The international human rights organization Amnesty International stated that the Belarusian security forces subjected migrants to torture, beaten, kept without food and set dogs on them.

In the EU, such a step was called a “hybrid attack” by Belarus. In particular, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Estonia accused the Belarusian authorities of using illegal migrants as weapons in a hybrid war against the EU. To prevent an influx of illegal immigrants, the Baltic states and Poland have significantly strengthened the security of their borders. In particular, countries are putting up barbed wire fences and taking other measures.

On November 23, 2021, Ukraine launched a special operation “Polesie” on the border with Belarus in order to prevent a migration crisis. Barbed wire fences are being installed on this section of the border, it is patrolled by specially equipped Airbus helicopters.
