Fifth grade has to go to school for vaccination

After a cry for help from the CLB, students from the fifth grade are expected to attend school for at least one day. “The measles vaccination can’t wait.”

We really have to see students from the fifth grade this year, “says Stefan Grielens, the general manager of the free centers for student guidance. According to the CLB, there is a real chance that some students will no longer go to class this school year. About 700,000 students have no prospect of a possible return to school for the time being. But there is now certainly one exception to this.

Mumps, the measles and rubella

“The fifth grade students should receive an important vaccination,” explains Grielens. On the return day – which schools have to work out themselves – children will be vaccinated against mumps, measles and rubella (BMR). “We must prevent collateral damage. That also means counteracting the declining vaccination coverage, “says Grielens. “A measles outbreak should absolutely be avoided. We can postpone other vaccinations in education to the next school year, but they can’t wait. “

“We must take this seriously,” confirms Joris Moonens of the Flemish Agency for Care and Health. “An outbreak, local or in a community, is not inconceivable. Measles is the most contagious disease we vaccinate against. We need to get 95 percent vaccination coverage to eliminate the disease. “

Not too much pressure

The CLB, which is responsible for more than 90 percent of the vaccinations of students in primary and secondary, wants to start on June 1. “We don’t want to put too much pressure on the schools at the moment. Our doctors are also fully involved in supporting schools, “says Grielens.
