Fifth Dutch arrested for plans to kidnap Belgian minister | Abroad

A fifth Dutchman was arrested in December for involvement in plans to kidnap the Belgian justice minister. This was confirmed by a Dutch police spokesman after the report of The conditional and Belgian media.

The court in Amsterdam will decide on January 19 whether the suspect will be handed over to Belgium. In October the Dutch court has already decided that the other four suspects will be tried in Belgium.

Dutch police have arrested the fifth suspect after a request for legal assistance from Belgium. The police spokesman was unable to provide further details of the arrest. The suspect was arrested on Dec. 15, according to his attorney.

According to The conditional it concerns 22-year-old Dutch Lorenzo B. Like his co-defendants, the man comes from The Hague, writes the Amsterdam newspaper. B. would have played a leading role in planning the kidnapping.

The five allegedly intended to kidnap the Belgian Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne. According to the police, the kidnapping was foiled just in time. At the home of the minister in the Belgian town of Kortrijk, four suspects allegedly left a car with, among other things, an automatic rifle and bottles of petrol.

Van Quickenborne had to go into hiding and was heavily guarded for days. He says he is looking for the perpetrators “in the corner of the drug mafia”.
