FF: the Practical and High-Performance Ferrari Supercar

In supersport models, practicality and comfort tend to come second as a trade-off for high performance, but it is also true that there are many selfish customers around the world who want both. An epoch-making model that perfectly meets these needs is Ferrari’s V12 model “FF” with 4-wheel drive, full 4-seater, and large luggage space.

“FF” that appeared with a novel shooting break

The car name “FF” was taken from the four-wheel drive and four-seater “Four”. It has earned a high reputation as a practical Ferrari.

In 2011, when production of the previous full-size 2+2 GT, the 612 Scaglietti, ended, Ferrari didn’t need long to announce its successor.

In contrast to Pininfarina’s elegant body styling, the silhouette was similar to that of a shooting brake. . The name of the car is FF (Ferrari Four). That is the official naming.

V12 naturally aspirated engine & 4WD system

Giving a full 4-seater a shooting brake style and realizing a unique appearance not found in existing Ferrari models.

Instead of a simple +2 seater, a practical independent rear seat is adopted. As a sports model, the large-capacity luggage space is also attractive.

The FF adopted various attempts that had never been seen before in Ferrari. The alphabet that symbolizes it is “F”, which of course means “Four = 4”. Customers who purchased 4WD “4”, 4 seater “4”, and FF as soon as possible highly appreciated the novelty not found in past Ferraris.

The engine mounted on the FF is a 6262cc V-type 12-cylinder DOHC (naturally aspirated). The method of transmitting torque from this front-mounted engine to the four wheels is relatively simple. Torque from the rear of the crankshaft to the rear wheels is directed to the 7th F1matic, and from the front is the 2nd gear. It is a mechanism that outputs to the box.

However, the 4WD drive mode is limited to 4th gear. The maximum output is 660PS, and the HELE system, which performs idling stop, etc., was standard equipment in Japanese specifications.

The seat is a full 4 seater instead of 2 + 2. Rear seat comfort is very high. Behind the rear seats is a 450-liter luggage compartment, which expands to about 800 liters when the rear seats are stowed. Of course, there was no such Ferrari in the past, so it became a hot topic as the first Ferrari that can be used for leisure.

30PS improved “GTC4 Lusso” debuted in 2016

GTC4 Lusso, which evolved from FF, was announced in 2016. “Lusso” attached to the car name means luxury or luxury.

The 6.3-liter V12 mounted on the front bay generates a maximum output of 690PS and a maximum torque of 697Nm. Adoption of a four-wheel steering system is also a topic.

And in February 2016, “GTC4 Lusso”, which can be said to be a big minor change version of FF, will make its debut. GTC is the name Ferrari once used for the 250 and 330. The Lusso, which means ‘luxury’ or ‘luxury’ in Italian, was also a popular model for the 250.

At first glance, the GTC4 Lusso seems to use the same body as the FF, but in fact the design has been revised from the roofline. With soft roundness, you can feel the character as a more elegant Gran Turismo (GT).

The installed engine is a V-type 12-cylinder DOHC with the same displacement of 6262cc as the FF. The maximum output is 690PS with an extra 30PS. 4RM, which is a 4WD system newly adopted in FF, is inherited as it is in this GTC4 Lusso, but in addition to that, a new 4-wheel steering system is adopted.

In addition to realizing stability in the high speed range and sharp cornering in the low speed range, it is also a major feature that the maneuverability has become conspicuous due to the reduction of the minimum turning radius in urban areas.

“GTC4 Lusso T” equipped with V8 twin turbo

GTC4 Lusso T released with V8 twin turbo as a variation model of GTC4 Lusso. Demonstrated high performance.

Furthermore, in September 2016, the “GTC4 Lusso T” equipped with a 3855cc V8 twin-turbo engine will be added. This is a port of the V8 twin-turbo engine that was installed in the California T and gained popularity, and while inheriting the rear wheel steering system, the drive system was made simple RWD, so from the V12 model GTC4 Lusso, The main feature is that the weight is as light as 50kg. Although it is a 4-seater, you can now enjoy attractive sports driving.

Of course, there are no major changes from the 12-cylinder model in terms of practicality, such as the capacity of the luggage room, the size of the seat, and the contents of the equipment. The maximum output of the V8 twin turbo is 610PS, which is about 80PS lower than the 12-cylinder GTC4 Lusso, but the driving performance is so high that Ferrari claims it is a “sport GT”. It achieves 100km/h acceleration in 3.5 seconds.
