The city’s cultural office invites you to the first Democracy Festival of Lights on the Day of German Unity. In front of the old district office on Kastellplatz, Eva Marxen, the director of the cultural office, and organizer Konrad Göke will hand out song sheets and candles on Saturday, October 3rd. It starts at 7 p.m. Eight singers from the opera choir of the combined Krefeld-Mönchengladbach theaters and eight brass players from the Niederrheinbrass group, under the direction of choir director Dennis Kittner, will provide musical accompaniment to the festival of lights. “We spontaneously decided to take part in this nationwide campaign and found partners in the Wirtshaus, Enni and Sparkasse who make the Festival of Lights possible,” said Eva Marxen.

For around 30 minutes, visitors to the Festival of Lights are invited to celebrate the 30th Day of German Unity by candlelight and sing along to well-known songs such as the European anthem, “Glück auf, der Steiger geht” or “Bella Ciao”. Konrad Göke: “The old district office, in which the district leadership of the NSDAP sat, is the right place to celebrate a festival for democracy.” Visitors from the twin town of Seelow in Brandenburg will also be there. “After the fall of the Wall, we worked closely with the local savings bank, and some of our colleagues were there for a few months,” said Sparkasse boss Giovanni Malaponti at the press conference. Stipe Madzar will be serving mulled wine in front of his tavern.
