In the first Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tournament, which took place after a break of about five months, the Frenchman celebrated the victory in the Palermo International competition on Sunday. Fiona Ferro.

In the final, Ferro (WTA 53.) won the fourth number of the competition Aneti Kontaveitu (WTA 22nd) with 6-2, 7-5.

The winner received 280 WTA ranking points for his performance, while Kontaveita is entitled to a hundred points less.

After losing the first set, Kontaveita in the eighth game of the second set took the opponent’s serve and reached 5-3. The Estonian was unable to serve a set for the next two games, for which he paid dearly at the end.

Ferro initially reached a tie 5-5, but in the 11th family took away the opponent’s serve. In the last game, Kontaveita was still trying to catch up with the Thai, but Ferro only needed two match balls to complete the game.

Previously in the semi-finals Kontaveita with 6-2, 6-4 won the first number Petru Martich from Croatia (WTA 15th). Meanwhile, Ferro defeated Italian Camilla George (WTA 89) 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

The last two WTA tournaments took place in France and Mexico in early March, as the world was devastated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Before going to Palermo, Kontaveit got good game practice in a test tournament, where the Latvian and Estonian national teams played a total of 11 games. In both singles, Kontastita defeated Latvia’s leading rackets Anastasia Sevastova and Alona Ostapenko.

Sevastova lost with 1-6, 2-6, while Ostapenko conceded with 2-6, 7-6 (7: 1), 7:10.

It has already been reported that more than 400 Covid-19 tests performed before the Palermo International WTA tournament were negative, but later tests revealed that one of the players was still infected with the virus. She immediately withdrew from the competition and went to quarantine, but the tennis player had no symptoms and the course of the tournament was not affected.

The Palermo tournament was the first official WTA event since mid-March, when a seasonal break was announced due to the pandemic caused by Covid-19.

After a break of about five months, the first qualifying matches were played in the Palermo tournament last Saturday.

None of the Latvian tennis players are participating in the tournament, but the first number has been awarded to the 15th place Croatian athlete Petra Martiča. Alona Ostapenko had planned to participate in this tournament, but later withdrew.

Last year, in the final, Swiss Jill Teihmane defeated Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands 7-6 (7: 3), 6-2.
