Commentary: The British Grand Prix was already the tenth event of this season. And it was probably the best race of this year, but not for Ferrari fans. At least for many of them. The Italian team demonstrated an absolutely tragic planning at Silverstone, the imaginary crown of it all was put on by team boss Mattia Binotto.
It was not only the best race of the season, but also one of the best events in F1 history. Objectively, we can describe the Great British Grand Prix as an advertisement for motorsport. There were beautiful battles and overtaking maneuvers, dramatic moments and also what is an integral part of motorsport – a dangerous crash.
It should be noted that Kuan-yu Chou fortunately escaped without serious injuries and the first moments after the crash were not only stressful for many fans due to concerns about the health of the young Chinese pilot.
If we subject the British Grand Prix to our classic microscope, we will find that this race once again showed us a lot. And above all from the point of view of Ferrari, which is currently being massively pilloried by its own fans on social networks.
Carlos Sainz cruised to victory but…
The first triumph of the twenty-seven-year-old Spaniard in the career of an F1 pilot. Sainz has been waiting since 2015 for the moment that all Formula 1 racers long for, namely winning a race, namely the 150 Grand Prix. The British Grand Prix did not go well for Sainz at first, when Max Verstappen got in front of him at the first start thanks to a better “punch”.
After a few moments, however, the red flags flew around the circuit and race management decided to suspend the British Grand Prix due to Chow’s huge collision and other hard contact.
After an hour’s break, the FIA announced a restart from the fixed positions in the order that corresponded to the original start. And on this second attempt, Sainz maintained his first place. But the Spanish pilot lost that in the tenth lap, when he made a minor riding mistake in the Maggot and Becketts corner section and went off the track.
Verstappen took full advantage of this and took the lead. However, the order at the front changed again, two laps later.
Verstappen began to lose speed significantly, which Sainz took advantage of and retook the lead in the British Grand Prix on the Hangar Straight. The race engineer then told Verstappen via the team radio that his Red Bull had some kind of aerodynamic problem and could not go full speed due to the less functioning aero in the left part of the car.
After the race, the reigning world champion explained that the loss of power (Verstappen had problems with downforce even in slow corners and suffered from understeer – editor’s note) was caused by a damaged floor.
