Federal press officer suspected of espionage

An employee of the Federal Government’s Press and Information Office is suspected of having worked for an Egyptian secret service for years. The Federal Criminal Police Office carried out “executive measures” against the man on behalf of the Federal Prosecutor General on page 308 of the constitutional protection report, which was presented on Thursday by Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) in Berlin. The investigation against the man is still ongoing.

The Attorney General confirmed to the “Bild” newspaper that the man was being investigated on suspicion of secret service activity (Section 99 (1) No. 1 of the Criminal Code). According to “picture” information, it should be an employee of the visitor service act whose premises have been searched. The man is said to have worked in the middle service.

The Federal press office, which is led by Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert stands, did not want to comment on the case: “We do not comment on ongoing investigations or personnel matters,” it said on request.

The focus of the activities of the Egyptian secret service in Germany is to gain knowledge about opposition figures living in Germany, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution noted in its 2019 annual report: “The Egyptian foreign service General Intelligence Service (GIS) and the domestic service National Security Service ( NSS) “. According to the information, the main aim is primarily towards members of the Muslim Brotherhood. But “other Egyptian-born people, such as members of the Christian Coptic communities, can also become the focus of the intelligence services”. According to reports, the Egyptian services tried to attract compatriots living in Germany for intelligence purposes, the report said.
