The festival of sacrifice was ‘very probably’ the reason for the large number of corona infections among the Moroccan community in Bergen op Zoom since the beginning of August. Mayor Frank Petter said this Monday afternoon at the historic town hall of Bergen op Zoom, writes de Volkskrant.
In the West Brabant municipality, a remarkably high number of 139 people tested positive for corona from 1 to 9 August – more than 14 percent of the 965 people who were tested in total. “Almost half of the infections come from the Moroccan community,” said Petter.
In the meantime, the municipality is also struggling with a Belgians problem. From Antwerp and the region there is free traffic towards Bergen op Zoom, the mayor said. “That is remarkable, because travelers from other orange areas are asked to go into quarantine for two weeks.” Yet the municipality is not taking any active measures to keep out Belgians. That is a task for the national government, says Petter.
