1. FC Köln in the BuLi: The 49th season of the club

1. FC Köln was founded after the Second World War on February 13, 1948 through the merger of the soccer clubs Kölner BC 01 and SpVgg Sülz 07. The club’s trademark is the white billy goat, which can be seen on the football club’s coat of arms. Two years after the club was founded, the FC was presented with a billy goat from the Williams circus at a carnival meeting, which the club president at the time, Franz Kremer, accepted. He was given the name “Hennes” after coach Hennes Weisweiler, who coached the team between 1948 and 1952.

One year after its founding, 1. FC Köln rose to the Oberliga West in 1949, the top division for West German teams at the time, and won the league’s championship title for the first time in 1954 – for the German championship it was enough against the stronger North German teams However not. Cologne was able to secure this title for the first time in 1962 when they defeated Nuremberg with a clear 4-0 in the final. The following year, Cologne played in the final for the championship, but had to admit defeat to Borussia Dortmund 1: 3.

In the following season, the best German clubs played together for the first time in the newly introduced Bundesliga, of which 1. FC Köln is one of the founding members. In contrast to other teams in the new league, the FC was already managed very professionally and secured the first championship title in Bundesliga history, ahead of Meidericher SV in second and Eintracht Frankfurt in third. Up until 1998, Cologne played continuously in the top class of German football for 35 years, but then relegated to the second division several times, only to fight their way back to the Bundesliga again and again later.

In total, 1. FC Köln has around 112,000 members, making it the sixth largest sports club in Germany. On the all-time Bundesliga table, which counts all points scored, Cologne ranks eighth. The club has won the German championship three times in 1962, 1964 and 1978. The Cologne soccer club has not yet achieved any international success.
