In the “Team of the Year” category, FC Bayern was nominated by sports journalists from 100 countries, and world footballer Robert Lewandowski was named “Sportsman of the Year”.

Competitors in the team classification are Jürgen Klopps FC Liverpool, who became English champions for the first time in 30 years, the Mercedes Formula 1 team around world champion Lewis Hamilton, NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, Super Bowl winner Kansas City Chiefs and the argentinian rugby team.

Lewandowski, who has already been honored as the best footballer in Europe and the world, would have to stand up for another award against Hamilton, professional tennis player Rafael Nadal, who won his 20th Grand Slam and thus caught up with Roger Federer, NBA superstar LeBron James, Uganda’s 5000- and 10,000 m world record holder Joshua Cheptegei and Sweden’s pole vault world record holder Armand Duplantis prevail. The prizes will be awarded virtually in May.

“We are very proud and happy to win six out of six titles – something that only FC Barcelona achieved before us in 2009,” said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “I know Lionel Messi is the only team player to have won the award and he had to share it with Lewis Hamilton, so maybe I can go one better,” said Lewandowski.
