FC Barcelona: ultimatum for ex-BVB professional Dembele – transfer or grandstand?

Exit in winter or summer?

The Catalan newspaper described the “soap opera” as “Sports world“ on Monday the situation of Ousmane Dembélé, his expiring contract and FC Barcelona. Even after months of talks, there is no solution to the questions: Will the 24-year-old still extend? Is he going? And if so: when? According to the newspaper, Barça gave the former Dortmund winger 48 hours to make a final decision. The consequences of this “yes” or “no” have not yet been finally determined, but various media have discussed several options.

After the 2: 3 in the Supercopa semi-final against archrival Real Madrid in the middle of last week, Barça managing director Mateu Alemany announced that he wanted to “quickly solve” the situation. Online journalist reported on Sunday Gerald Romero then, in contrast to “Mundo Deportivo”, that Dembélé informed the club that he did not want to accept the present offer.

There had already been reports in November that the French international was not convinced because the annual salary offered did not suit him. As a result, there had been repeated unconfirmed reports that Dembélé wanted to earn up to 40 million euros a year – a sum that debt-plagued Barcelona would probably not shell out even if the right winger played more often than was injured. The “Sportmeanwhile writes of the required 20 million euros gross plus a corresponding signing bonus.

Dembélé and FC Barcelona: winter change or grandstand seat?

According to Romero, Barcelona therefore want to withdraw the offer and end the negotiations. It is even possible that if Dembélé does not find a club in this winter transfer window, he will have to sit in the stands until the summer. This plan is met with divided opinions in the TM community. Although there are users who support this view, others emphasize the sporting value of a fit Dembélé, who ultimately wants to defend the World Cup with France in winter and would therefore hardly let himself down. Most recently, it was the fast attacker who initiated the comeback with his goal at third division Linares in the Copa del Rey in the 63rd minute and thus prevented an embarrassment. According to “Sport”, coach Xavi also shares this view.

Whether Dembele will be used in the second half of the season also depends on the reaction of the spectators. Xavi has said he wants to use him because he’s a sporting reinforcement, but if the spectators boo him every time he touches the ball and Ous doesn’t have the strongest psyche anyway, it can affect the whole team and it wouldn’t be Well.
One should not underestimate the reaction of the culers here. After all, you waited over 4 years for the boy to get fit…

It is also possible, Romero claimed, that Barça could significantly lower the €500m release clause in Dembélé’s contract: as a sign to interested clubs that a transfer in January is the Catalans’ preferred option. An early departure would free up valuable payroll space for Barcelona. For example, to strengthen again in winter. There are loose rumors about homegrown Adama Traoré (25), and Álvaro Morata (29) has not yet been given up, or about the strong talents Nico González (20) and Gavi (17) finally registering with the first team.

According to “Mundo Deportivo”, Barça tried to find out whether Dembélé, who has been free to negotiate a summer transfer since January 1, is already far away with an interested club – without success. In the Premier League, which is considered the most likely goal of the Bundesliga record departure, so far there is no trace. With the extension of Kingsley Coman (25), the alleged interest of Bayern Munich is probably off the table. A change in winter or even a contract termination reported by “Sport” requires the player’s consent. And he actually wants to stay until summer.

The most likely option seems to be for Dembélé to sit out his contract until the summer and then move, also to collect a corresponding signing fee from his new club on a free transfer. Whether Barça, which is just behind the Champions League places in the league and is financially dependent on the best possible result of the season, would really banish the player to the stands, seems at least questionable from a logical point of view. However, this should be clear by February 1st at the latest.

Dembele won’t move now! Why should he? He earns extremely well these six months at Barca, also has half a year to look for a new club instead of 2 weeks and gets a big bonus because no fee is due.
Why shouldn’t Dembele play at the World Cup in Nov/Dec 2022 when he will be able to perform at another club from July 2022. Because he sat in the stands at Barca for 4 months because they were mad at him for not leaving for less money …
