Fattening mineral water? Carbon dioxide could cause weight gain

Drinking water is always high on the list if it is is about losing weight. Because if you drink enough, you can keep your appetite in check, they say. However, carbonated water may have the opposite effect.

It is hard to believe what researchers at the Birzeit University in Ramallah have found: A regular glass of mineral water can lead to weight gain. It is well known that there is not a single calorie in the drink. According to the study, it is Carbon dioxidewhich can lead to more body weight after a certain period of time.

Rats gained weight from mineral water

The researchers fed two groups of male rats an identical diet for one year and kept the animals under the same conditions. There was only one difference: one group got tap water, the other drank sparkling mineral water. The result: The rodents from the fizzy group gained significantly in weight, but the tap water drinkers did not.

So it’s a hormone to blame

After completing the experiment, the scientists found that the carbon dioxide consumers among the rats had elevated levels of a certain hormone. It’s called ghrelin. The Hormone is responsible, among other things, for controlling appetite, also in humans. It is therefore also known as the hunger hormone. The higher the ghrelin level in the blood, the greater the appetite. The rodents of the carbonic acid group therefore ate more. And there was another abnormality in the rats: They also had a significantly increased amount of fat in their livers.

Carbon dioxide – a risk factor for being overweight?

The researchers then conducted a small study with 20 male students. They also differed in their eating and drinking behavior only in that half of the men were allowed to consume carbon dioxide and the other half were not. And indeed: here, too, the fizzy fraction had increased ghrelin levels, whereas the silent drinkers did not. “The result of the study shows that carbonic acid plays an important role in weight gain and the onset of obesity in male mammals because of the ghrelin release and the associated stimulation of appetite,” the researchers said.

The waiver could cause pounds to tumble

The study situation is still very thin. But if you are a fan of carbon dioxide and fight with your weight at the same time, it might be worth trying on yourself. Also because quite a few suffer from flatulence anyway when they consume carbonated beverages, it can be helpful to forego the tingling sensation. Because without the “bloated stomach” the silhouette is a bit slimmer.
