Fatalities from Hurricane Ianos in Greece | Abroad

The town of Karditsa, 300 kilometers northwest of the capital, Athens, was badly affected with mudslides, fallen trees and power cuts. In that region a farmer was found dead on his farm.

Elsewhere in the area, a woman was found drowned in her flooded home. A third victim is still missing, it is a motorist whose car was dragged along by the high water in a river.

Distress signal migrant ship

In the Ionian Sea, a search is still underway for a ship with 55 migrants on board, which sent a distress signal on Friday. The Greek coast guard is taking into account that the ship has changed course to avoid the storm.

The hurricane was accompanied by gusts of wind up to 117 kilometers per hour and heavy rainfall. It mainly affected the west of Greece, including the islands of Kefalonia and Zaynthos, which are also popular with holidaymakers. Ianos is also called a ‘medicane’, a storm depression that can develop in the Mediterranean Sea towards the end of summer, where the water is still warm.
