Fast charging is bad for batteries? Xiaomi already answered

With ever-increasing demands on energy, smartphones are being prepared to be charged quickly and efficiently. Xiaomi is one of the brands that has invested the most in this area, with very interesting solutions.

Of course, there is always a question about the impact these technologies have on batteries and how they affect them over time. Xiaomi has now decided to open the game and reveal everything, but the news doesn’t look good for those who use it normally.

It was at the end of last May that Xiaomi unveiled its HyperCharge system. This promises to charge a smartphone battery in just 8 minutes using a physical connection, or 15 minutes if using a wireless charger.

Using powers that reach 200W on cable and 120W on wireless, Xiaomi can beat all the competition. This should soon be the standard and what users will have access to natively on their equipment, with chargers present with smartphones.

Now, and in a Q&A session on the Weibo network, Xiaomi decided to reveal a little more, namely the impact on the batteries. According to what has been advanced, after 800 charge cycles, the batteries that use this technology should be able to retain only 80% of the charge.

What is normal and expected, these 800 charge cycles are reached after 2 years, which represents a significant loss. It is expected that a 4,000mAh battery has an effective charge of 3,200mAh and that a smartphone with a 5,000mAh battery will only be able to use 4,000mAh.

These data from Xiaomi are close to what OPPO had already presented last year. Their 125W solution had the same battery loss for the 80% now shown. Interestingly, its 65W solution only drops to 91%.

Even though it is not an expected and desired value, Xiaomi has shown that it is meeting industry standards. The performance loss on a smartphone battery is expected to be higher. It must be maintained at least 60% after 400 charge cycles.
