Farmers in the Netherlands protest against reducing nitrogen emissions

In many parts of the Netherlands, farmers paralyzed highways and country roads for several hours with tractors, other machinery and hay bales. In the northern province of Groningen, a number of checkpoints on the German border have been blocked and congestion has developed for many kilometers.

The protesters emphasized that the new rules could cause serious damage, and the authorities did not deny this.

The decision calls for nitrogen emissions to be reduced by around 70% in protected areas, for example, and a third of livestock farmers could face serious difficulties.

Proponents of the idea, including many environmental activists, pointed out that nitrogen emissions contribute to acid rain and water quality. It contributes to the overgrowth of water bodies and other negative changes in nature.
