Farm Celebrity, Celebrity | Skin braids slaughtered on «The farm celebrity»

The farm life in 1922 continues for the celebrities at Bøensætre farm in Aremark. The first week offered its share of drama when one of the participants Kjersti Grini’s (50) vocabulary made the others rage, and this year’s first participant smoked out in a nerve-wracking duel.

The stage is set for week two inside the idyllic farm in Eastern Norway with a new large farmer and a new weekly assignment.

One of the assignments to be carried out is, among other things, the slaughter of rabbits. It provokes reactions from Sophie Elise Isachsen (27) who has been a vegetarian for many years, and has fought for this battle in the media several times.

For the animal lover Isachsen, it became natural that she was given responsibility for the animal care inside the farm, and in an earlier episode she referred to herself as the “rabbit whisperer”. That rabbit slaughter was on the program was completely beyond her comprehension, but still she wanted to be present during the slaughter.

– Should have been stopped

Part of the weekly assignment involves making a muff using the skin of the rabbits. Thus, two of the farm’s rabbits had to be sacrificed, and the very basis for this was that several of the participants opposed.

– The slaughter should have been stopped. It has nothing to do with whether you eat animals or not, or how “humane” the animals were slaughtered, says Shabana Rehman (45) to Nettavisen.

Isachsen realized early on that it was useless to fight against the slaughter, and therefore she wanted to ensure that the animals were as well off as possible before the slaughter took place.

But for Isachsen, the idea that the rabbits should be turned into fashion garments was completely absurd.

– It felt so unnecessary that we should kill the rabbits to make a garment for a fictional character, Isachsen tells Nettavisen.

Both Isachsen and Rehman are vegetarians, and Rehman reacts to the fact that the 27-year-old succumbed to the big farmer’s will and did not make an attempt to stop the slaughter.

“Both Sophie and I should have done what we could to stop this unnecessary slaughter, because we have both chosen to be aware of animal rights, no matter what others may say or think,” Rehman told Nettavisen.

– I had done the same no matter who it had been, and no one asked me to do anything, Isachsen answers back.

The animal advocate is aware that animals die, and the experience itself was thus not as shocking for Isachsen.

– I think such experiences are worse for those who have no relation to where their food comes from. The animals on the farm are much better off than many other animals, says Isachsen.

Not tough

Rehman did not want to be present during the slaughter, and after the recording of the reality series, there are several things she regrets from the slaughter.

After the slaughter, Rehman and Isachsen share a sensitive moment together, where she praises the 27-year-old for her courage during the slaughter. But today, Rehman is neither proud of Isachsen nor himself.

– I think neither Sophie was tough who followed the rabbits to death, nor I who could not see the slaughter. To what use? For the big farmer to get the extra point knife as a prize?

As the self-proclaimed “rabbit whisperer”, Isachsen wanted to provide security for the animals prior to slaughter, and Isachsen was aware that slaughter is part of farm life.

– I understood that the rabbit would be slaughtered anyway, and since I was the only one who had spent time with the rabbits, I thought it was best that I picked them up so it was not more stressful than it needed, Isachsen answers back.

Rehman believes that the responsibility not only rests with the 27-year-old, she bitterly regrets that she herself did not intervene when the slaughter was a fact.

– I did not go to the farm as an activist, but there is no excuse for that slaughter. It’s something I’ll regret for the rest of my life, that I did not do everything to prevent. Those rabbits should have been rescued, says Rehman.
