Singapore Woman Delivers Healthy baby After IVF Treatment to Avoid Genetic condition
SINGAPORE – A Singaporean woman, Ms. Felicia Lee, successfully delivered a daughter, Phoebe, after undergoing two rounds of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) to ensure the baby would not inherit her familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), a genetic condition that can lead to colorectal cancer.
Ms. Lee, 39 at the time of her marriage to Cedric Ng, 41, in 2022, proactively disclosed her FAP to her husband as they began planning for a family. recognizing the potential for thier child to inherit the condition, the couple opted for IVF not only to address age-related conception challenges but also to preemptively prevent the transmission of FAP.
“When I knew we were serious about each othre, I decided to tell him about my FAP. Since we were planning a future together and wanted to have children, it felt crucial for him to no,” Ms. Lee said.
The pregnancy itself presented complications due to Ms. LeeS condition, requiring delivery via caesarean section at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) with her colorectal doctors on standby. She was subsequently re-admitted three days post-delivery due to intestinal obstruction and remained hospitalized for a week.
Despite the challenges,Ms.Lee expressed profound gratitude. “Going through all those challenges makes our daughter all the more precious,” she said. Phoebe is now one year old.
