‘family Stone‘ Sequel in Development, Original Cast Expresses Enthusiasm
A sequel to the beloved 2005 holiday film the Family Stone is in development, with writer-director Thomas Bezucha at the helm. The project is moving forward following the October 11th death of Diane Keaton, who starred as matriarch Sybil Stone in the original, and with reported unanimous interest from the film’s original cast.
The first film centered on the Stone family’s Christmas gathering after Sybil’s breast cancer diagnosis. The sequel will be set after Sybil’s death, aiming to honor Keaton’s memory and continue the story of the Stone family. Bezucha had been planning a second film prior to Keaton’s passing, but her death has deepened his commitment to the project. “I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” Bezucha told CNN. “mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”
Before beginning to write, Bezucha’s producer contacted actors from the original cast to gauge their interest. “I’m not interested in the Brady family reunion without the original Jan,” Bezucha told CNN,referencing the importance of securing the original ensemble. Potential returnees include Craig T. nelson as patriarch Kelly Stone,Rachel McAdams and Elizabeth Reaser as daughters Amy and Meredith, and Dermot Mulroney,Luke Wilson, and Tyrone Giordano as sons Everett,Ben,and Thad, respectively. Claire Danes and Sarah Jessica Parker, who played sisters and love interests in the first film, and Brian J.white are also being considered for roles.
The Family Stone is currently available to stream on Disney+.
