‘Fallen dead after Nigerian army opens fire at demonstration’ | NOW

In the Nigerian city of Lagos, several people died on Tuesday after the army opened fire on a group of protesters, human rights organization Amnesty International reports.

“Several protesters have been killed, we are trying to find out exactly how many,” said an Amnesty spokesman. According to news agency Reuters at least two people died after being hit by bullets from the Nigerian army.

The army opened fire in the Likki urban district, where thousands of protesters have been gathering for several days. The protesters are protesting against excessive police violence in the country. Two weeks ago, the Nigerian police decided a controversial one police unit immediately due to the demonstrations.

As the protests continue, a curfew has been imposed in Lagos. National police have also deployed riot police after protesters raided multiple police stations across the country.

A spokesman for the local government says to investigate the violent use of the army in Lagos on Tuesday evening.
