Fake SMS with package notifications are based on Facebook Leak – schieb.de

They cause great uncertainty: There are currently a particularly large number of messages circulating that look like a parcel notification – but are pure fraud. Clicking or tapping the link address in the SMS runs the risk of getting a Trojan onto your smartphone. The utmost caution is advised here!

“Your package is still pending. Please confirm your details here ”: Anyone who receives such a short message or a similar one should be absolutely careful – and under no circumstances click or tap on the link contained in the message. And do not trust the sender with any personal data. Because it is a trap.

Background: Last weekend, over 530 million data records with data from Facebook users appeared on the Internet. Freely accessible to everyone in hacker forums. With personal and sensitive data such as name, date of birth or email address. A comparatively big hack. This opens the door to abuse by cyber criminals.

Data theft was two years ago – data is now circulating

The actual data theft was a long time ago. In autumn 2018, hackers were able to tap user data on a large scale by exploiting unforgivable security gaps on Facebook. Not only data that can be seen publicly on Facebook, but also personal and sensitive data: name, place of residence, email address, phone number, gender, relationship status and much more.

The data was collected unnoticed and offered for sale in hacker forums at the beginning of the year. Now the data is freely available, which of course increases the risk of misuse enormously. 6 million Germans are affected. Facebook then closed the security leak in 2019.

What do hackers want to do with phone numbers?

Now, of course, the question arises: What risk is there if such data – some of which are even public on Facebook – get into the hands of cyber criminals? What should you do with my phone number?

You definitely shouldn’t underestimate that. The records contain a bundle of sensitive data: Name, date of birth, place of residence, email address and telephone number. Cybercriminals use this data primarily to send targeted phishing emails – or phishing SMS. In other words, messages that look like they came from an official source, for example the bank, PayPal, Amazon, DHL, UPS or another popular service.

If the message looks original, contains a correct salutation and perhaps also your own telephone number, then the cover letter is assumed to be genuine. The recipients open the message, unsuspectingly click the link – but end up on manipulated websites. They look real – but then attack access data. The cyber criminals can already access the online account. This can have fatal consequences.

The mesh is already being actively used

Phishing emails are common – and unfortunately very often successful. There is currently a wave of fake SMS. You claim a package could not be delivered. Anyone who clicks on the link ends up on Amazon, for example, and should enter their data. Whoever does this could become a victim: Ordering strangers at the expense of the victims. Such fake SMS are currently circulating more frequently than usual. Probably already the first episode of the data leak.

There is no help on Facebook. I.

But I have found two offers that help further. One thing was set up by a young developer who works as a developer for a Cologne startup. Under fbleak.freddygreve.com the offer is to be achieved. All you have to do here is enter your Facebook ID. That was also stolen. It is wise that the ID is requested because it is public.

If you had to enter your email address or phone number, many would feel uncomfortable. The Facebook ID can be found in the Facebook app in a flash and then entered on the website. The website already informs you whether you are affected or not. For example, I am affected.

It is also recommended HaveIbeenPawned. Enter your email address or phone number – you will find out whether you are affected or have been a victim of one of the many other leaks. Very convenient.
