Fact check: the hoaxes that cause the Spanish flu are the bacteria from the meningitis vaccine

Fact Check Liputan6.com traced the facts and found an article from the AFP Fact Check entitled “Facebook posts falsely claim that bacterial meningitis vaccine, not H1N1 virus, caused 1918 Spanish flu pandemic” and airs November 24, 2020.

The article contains an explanation from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding the 1918 Spanish Flu.

“The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most severe pandemic in recent history. This pandemic was caused by the H1N1 virus whose genes originated in birds. Although there is no general agreement on where the virus originated, the virus spread around the world from 1918 to 1919.”

other than that AFP Fact Check also asked for an explanation from Dr Peter Hobbins of the University of Sydney who specializes in medicine and technology.

He said autopsies carried out on victims after the Spanish flu pandemic did not show any bacteria from the experimental meningitis vaccine.

“The main cause of death is lungs filled with fluid either due to disease or the body’s excessive immune response to infection. There is no indication that death was due to experimental vaccines,” Hobbins said.

Dr. Hobbins also explained that the main cause of the Spanish Flu pandemic was a new strain of influenza A virus. At that time the world was trying to make a vaccine but the microscope used was not strong enough to see the virus.
