faced with a recovery of the Covid-19 in Arizona, the anger of relatives of victims

In the United States, cases of Covid-19 continue to increase in many southern states, but also in California, which decided to reconfigure its economy on Monday July 13. Another red dot with Arizona, which has become one of the epicenters of the epidemic since its lifting of containment on May 8.

From our special envoy to Phoenix,

At her father’s funeral on Wednesday, Kristin Urkiza invited Doug Ducey, the Republican governor of Arizona. The young woman wanted to show him, she said, the result of her policy in the face of coronavirus.

His father, a 65-year-old Latin worker, contracted Covid-19 two weeks after the early lifting of containment in Arizona. He died three weeks later, all alone in a Phoenix hospital room.

The Republican governor of Arizona has still not made the wearing of the mask compulsory, also arousing the anger of the Democratic mayor of Phoenix, who requests it to slow the epidemic.

« For me, the governor has blood on his hands »

According to Kristin, the governor is responsible for the death of his father for having deconfigured too soon and too quickly. ” My father’s death could have been prevented. It is just the result of a disastrous policy of the governor who himself follows the president trump line, she believes. My father believed that it was safe to go back to a restaurant, to go out with friends, just because the authorities said it was safe when Arizona deconfigured. So, for me, the governor has blood on his hands. If he listened to science and epidemiologists, we would not be there! »

Arizona was one of the first states to emerge from containment in early May. Two months later, it has the highest contamination rate in the United States. Since the death of his father, Kristin Urkiza has expressed his anger in the media with a simple request to the governor: to make the wearing of the mask mandatory and to listen to scientists rather than Donald Trump.

► California backtracks and orders restrictions

« We return to a modified form of our initial containment instruction Said Governor Gavin Newsom. A few weeks ago, he strictly excluded any new restrictions, but the health situation clearly left him no choice.

California was the first US state to impose general containment last March. But for several weeks, the number of cases has been increasing. California has about 330,000, including more than 7,000 dead.

To stem this new rebound of the pandemic, the governor announced that ordered restrictions for certain particularly affected areas now apply throughout the state. This applies in particular to bars, dining rooms and cinemas which must remain closed. In some counties, a series of businesses and services will also be closed until further notice.

Schools in Los Angeles will not reopen on August 18 as planned. For the 600,000 students, the lessons will be done remotely. Orange County, on the other hand, whose people support President Donald Trump, voted to reopen schools this fall, with no obligation to wear masks.
