Facebook’s announcement that he will change his name to Meta has caused quite a stir in Israel, where the word sounds like the Hebrew word for “dead.” To be precise, Meta is pronounced like the feminine form of the Hebrew word. Several people have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on the name with the hashtag #FacebookDead.

It is not the only case. There are numerous examples of when the essence was lost in translation. When KFC came to China in the 1980s, his motto “suck your fingers well” was not very well received by the locals. The translation of the motto in Mandarin was “eat your fingers.” Meanwhile, when Nokia launched its Lumia phone in 2011, it didn’t get exactly the reaction it was hoping for. In Spanish, Lumia is synonymous with prostitute.
