Facebook’s boycott is growing. Famous names have been added to companies refusing to advertise on the network

The organizers of the movement are calling for a boycott of advertising on Facebook. According to them, the operator of this social network is not doing enough to stop hate speech. Common Sense Media wants to expand the campaign worldwide. Together with the Free Press and the civil rights groups Color of Change and the Anti-Defamation League, it is leading the movement.

“The next step is global pressure,” said Jim Steyer, who leads Common Sense Media. He added that a campaign called Stop Hate for Profit would start to appeal to leading European companies to join the boycott of advertising on Facebook.

At the beginning of the movement was the recent death of the American black George Floyd, who died in a police operation. His demise sparked mass demonstrations against racism and police violence in the United States, from where protests spread throughout the world.

The campaign claims that Facebook, which operates the social network of the same name and another Instagram network, refuses to take stronger action against hate speech on its platforms because it does not want to jeopardize advertising revenue.

The movement has already supported more than 160 companies, including the American telecommunications company Verizon Communications, the Dutch consumer goods manufacturer Unilever or the world’s largest soft drink producer, the American company Coca-Cola.

According to the organizers, the head of the American company Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, has already lost billions of dollars due to the boycott. Facebook shares fell 8.3 percent on Friday, the highest in three months.

Meanwhile, the American coffee chain Starbucks has announced that it is suspending all its advertising on all social networks in order to focus on finding ways to stop the spread of hate speech on the Internet.

“We believe more needs to be done to create friendly and inclusive online communities,” said Starbucks. “We will suspend advertising on all social platforms and in the meantime we will continue internal discussions, conversations with our media partners and civil rights organizations in an effort to stop the spread of hate speech,” the chain added.
