Facebook will launch smart glasses next year

16 september 2020

Facebook is working on ‘augmented reality’ and will launch ‘smart glasses’ in 2021. CEO Mark Zuckerberg also announced the successor to the popular virtual reality headset, the Quest.

Mark Zuckerberg spoke on Facebook Connect, a conference run by Facebook Reality Labs. This department specializes in both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), a technology that places an interactive digital layer on physical reality.

The VR headset Quest 2 will be lighter and faster, with a 50 percent higher pixel resolution, while the price, $ 299 for the base model, is a hundred dollars less than its predecessor. In our regions the price is 349 euros. Deliveries are foreseen from 13 October.

Just like its predecessor, the device does not need a PC and replaces not only the first Quest but also the Rift headsets, which were still connected to a PC with cables.

Smart glasses

Facebook Connect is a completely virtual meeting this year. Zuckerberg seemed to be speaking from his parlor, speaking of the imperfections of video conferencing in this time of pandemic. VR, on the other hand, allows the same virtual space to be shared, he emphasized. But the future also belongs to AR.

Facebook has teamed up with Ray-Ban from the French-Italian EssilorLuxottica to create attractive glasses for AR. Next year, ‘smart glasses’ will come onto the market, which should be a step towards ‘real AR glasses’. Product specifications are not yet known.
