Facebook releases new cache tool in open source

Facebook has now released the open source Cachelib tool that the company uses to use cache data without having to rely on DRAM, reports The Register.

“As traditional dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) caches become more expensive and need more power to scale, companies like Facebook have begun exploring hardware alternatives such as using non-volatile memory (NVM) to improve their caching systems.” , writes Facebooks in Sathya Gunasekar, Snehal Khandkar, Dmitry Vinnik and Michael Cheng in one blog posts and continues:

“This DRAM and NVM hybrid model is a step forward, but innovative caching design is needed to reach the full potential of the hybrid cache.”

In addition to Cachelib, Facebook has previously released Cachebench that can be used to evaluate caching performance. According to the developers, both the tools have the potential to become an industry standard for innovations and benchmarking in caching.
