Facebook photos show Alberta UCP MLA spending Christmas in Mexico

Edmonton – An Alberta MLA recently greeted his Facebook friends with ‘Merry Christmas’ from an adventure park near Cancun, Mexico, and posted government messages encouraging Alberton to stay home.

On December 24, Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pat Rehn posted a photo of himself in a blue shirt, titled “Merry Christmas from Our Cave.”

This photo appears to have been taken at Explore Park, a theme park in Playa del Carmen.

Rehn’s own profile photo shows him standing with three other men in cowboy hats, “Save lives.”

The Alberta government uses branded journalism, which also discourages unnecessary international travel.

Provincial health officials have repeatedly urged Albertson to celebrate the holidays safely and stay home as much as possible.

Rehn was elected in 2019 as a member of the United Conservative Party.

CTV News contacted Rehman and the Prime Minister’s Office for comment on Edmonton, but received no response.

Alberta’s NDP has asked the United Conservative Party to reveal how many cabinet ministers and the MLA have traveled outside of Canada since early December in protest of the official consultation.

“We owe it to all of them to explain who was not in their position during the worst public health emergency Alberts has ever faced,” said NTP city affairs commentator Joe CC in a written statement.

He called on Municipal Affairs Minister Tracy Alert to resign Thursday. Following the media reports that he was in Hawaii recently.

Press secretaries for Alert and the Prime Minister’s Office did not respond to CTV News Edmonton’s request for confirmation and comment.

So far, Rehn is the only provincial elected official in Alberta who has traveled internationally during the holidays.

On Wednesday, UCP faced criticism after photos of two academic press secretaries went on vacation to Hawaii. Michael Forian, the press secretary to Education Minister Adriana Lagrange, deleted two social media accounts after photos posted on Instagram began to go out of circulation.

International holidays have become a political trend. Ontario Finance Minister Rod Phillips spent Christmas in the Caribbean, despite posts on social media that he was in Canada and against public health advice.
