Facebook group builds large AI supercomputer – Radio Cologne

Menlo Park (dpa) – The Facebook group Meta wants to build the most powerful supercomputer for applications with artificial intelligence this year.

For example, the system should enable real-time translations that larger groups of people can use to converse in different languages, Meta explained in a blog entry. Over time, it should also develop technologies for the virtual world Metaverse, in which Meta sees its future.

16,000 graphics processors

The supercomputer called AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) has been developed from scratch by the Facebook group since the beginning of 2020, including the solutions for cooling and cabling. Fully expanded by mid-2022, it will connect 16,000 graphics processors, currently 6080. Graphics processors are considered to be particularly efficient for computing when learning artificial intelligence. Meta relies on chips from market leader Nvidia for its supercomputer.

Among other things, the meta group uses artificial intelligence to automatically filter out content such as hate speech or violence that is prohibited on the platform. Meta sees itself on the right track: 98 percent of hate speech posts are now discovered before anyone sees them. On the other hand, critics such as whistleblower Frances Haugen warn that artificial intelligence cannot adequately solve the problem.
