Facebook discovers old-fashioned calling with new test app CatchUp | NOW

Facebook is testing a new app in the United States that allows users to simply call each other, without an image. The company announced this in a blog post.

The biggest convenience that CatchUp offers according to Facebook is that the app shows when others are available to make calls. The app does this with a green dot next to a user’s name.

“Sending messages and video calling are good ways to send each other a quick update or see each other face-to-face, but making a phone call offers a unique balance between convenience and personal connection,” Facebook said. “Our research shows that people don’t call each other often, because they don’t know when the other is available and they fear to disturb someone.”

One-to-one conversations can be started with CatchUp, but it is also possible to set up group conversations. This is possible for up to eight people at a time.

It is not clear when the app will be rolled out more widely. Facebook writes that CatchUp will be “tested for a short time” in the US on iOS and Android devices.
