Facebook angry with policy on texting apps on iPhone | NOW

Tech giant Facebook is critical of Apple for refusing to let users change the default text messaging app. That tells Messenger boss Stan Chudnovsky The Information.

“We think people should choose which messaging app is the default on their phones,” says Chudnovsky. “After all, that already happens with all other types of apps.”

Apple recently released software update iOS 14, which makes it possible to change the default apps for email and web browsing. A similar toggle for chat applications is not yet in place, which automatically opens text messages in Apple’s Messages app.

In demand for years

Chudnovsky says he’s been asking Apple to add the capability for years, but the tech giant has refused to do so.

With competitor Android it is already possible to change the default app for messages. It’s unknown why Apple doesn’t allow this, but it may be related to the iMessage messaging service. It automatically turns text messages to other iPhone users into iMessage messages.

Tensions between Facebook and Apple

Chudnovsky’s criticism comes after Apple took several measures to make it harder for Facebook. The company is going to restrict what data advertisers can view to ensure user privacy. However, this makes advertising less lucrative, Facebook said.

Earlier this week, Apple made an exception for Facebook to the payment rules in the App Store. The company does not have to hand over 30 percent of the sales made by paid live streams in the Facebook app to the tech giant.
