Face masks make you prettier – Wel.nl

British academics have discovered a plus of corona: we look more attractive with face masks.

Cardiff University researchers were surprised to find that both men and women looked better with a hood that hid the lower half of their faces.

And a shame for the OMT: disposable surgical caps scored highest.

Dr. Michael Lewis , psychologist at Cardiff University and expert on faces, said medical face masks score lower because they are associated with illness or disease.

“Our study shows that faces are found to be most attractive when they are covered with simple caps.

The first part of the survey took place in February 2021, when the British population had become somewhat accustomed to wearing masks. Forty-three women were asked to rate the attractiveness of images of male faces without a mask, wearing a plain cloth mask, a blue medical face mask, and without a mask on a scale of one to ten.

The participants said those with a cloth mask were more attractive than those without a mask. But through a surgical mask – a normal disposable mask – the wearer looked yet better off.

Lewis thinks face masks make people more attractive because they draw attention to the eyes. He says other studies had shown that covering the left or right half of a face also made people look more attractive, in part because the brain fills in the missing holes with something beautiful.

The results of the study have been published in the journal Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications.
