Face masks and more modest weddings. Poles will remember this October

1,552 new infections – these are the statistics of the coronavirus in Poland from the last 24 hours. Over the past week, the sanitary services have already detected 9.8 thousand. infections. It is certain – such an epidemic week has never happened in Poland.

The situation can be illustrated in one more way. Records broke every day. There was no such Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the history of the epidemic in Poland either.

What is the epidemic situation in Poland?

In none of the last seven days has the number of infections dropped below the threshold of 1,000. A total of 91.5 thousand have been detected. infections (of which 69.6 thousand people are considered convicted). Threshold of 100 thousand. We will exceed infections in Poland within the next 6 days (unless the epidemic accelerates or slows down).

How many Poles are locked in quarantine?

In turn, nearly 130,000 are in quarantine. people. This is not a record number, although it is a level that has not been seen for a long time. At the peak of the epidemic, there were as many as 180,000 in quarantine. people. However, it is worth remembering that it was the moment of the mass return of Poles to the country. They automatically fell into isolation. This means that today’s situation is no better than that of a few months ago.

Data from the Ministry of Health show that the number of people connected to respirators has grown significantly. Now it is already 150 people. A week ago, it was half as much. And this means that the increase in the number of those infected by 10,000. people, had an impact on 80 more occupied respirators. At the same time, during the week the number of occupied beds increased by nearly 500 – from 1.9 thousand. up to 2.4 thousand

However, these statistics should be monitored in the longer term. It usually takes 2 weeks between the increase in infections and the increase in the number of people with serious health problems. Most deaths increase drastically within the next 2 weeks.

New restrictions from mid-month

The effect of recent increases is one. These are changes to the restrictions. The biggest novelty is the reduced number of guests at weddings. This is bad news for couples and people planning a wedding.

Until now, there was a limit of 150 people in green zones, 100 people in yellow zones and 50 people in red zones. Therefore, the vast majority of Poles could have fun at weddings for 150 people. After the changes, there will be only 100 people in the green zones, and 75 people in the yellow zones.

The obligation to wear masks in open spaces, also in yellow zones, is also a big change. Going to the store means putting on the mask at home and taking it off when you return. On the street and in the store itself, the mask is mandatory. Other news? Limited operating hours for restaurants, clubs and pubs in the red zone (most affected by the virus). They can only be open until 22.00.

Currently, there are exactly 21 counties in the yellow and red zones. According to money.pl calculations, the changes will affect as many as 1.7 million people. This is how many yellow and red zones live at the moment.

According to money.pl, changes to the functioning of the rules will most likely come into force only from mid-October. The Ministry of Health will present an appropriate draft on this matter by the end of the week, and then will conduct its consultations. The vacatio legis of changes (i.e. the period between the publication date and the effective date of the regulations) is planned for the next 7 days. And this means that new products will not appear earlier than around October 15.

The number of infections is increasing and the “lockdown” is gone

Today, however, questions arise, how is it possible that the lockdown of the entire economy and the closure of schools appeared in Poland at a time when… we had only a dozen infections. Today there are 100 times more of them, and the changes affect only some poviats.

Adam Niedzielski in an interview with money.pl does not hide that the differences between spring and autumn are basically two. The first is knowledge about the virus and the available drugs that limit its power. The second is economic costs. The economy of the second such major closure might not survive intact.

And this worry about finances is also visible in other countries. Example? Croatia – as a cost-free change that allows to limit the transmission of the virus – treats music down in the premises. For what? So that people don’t scream during conversations.

– The situation in spring, when the coronavirus was just reaching Poland, was completely different than today. It cannot be compared one to one – says Adam Niedzielski, the Minister of Health, to money.pl.

What was the process of changing the regulations like?

– In March, we knew very little about the new virus that had attacked us. Nobody really knew what we were going to face. Instead, we have seen the dramatic situation in Italy, Spain and Great Britain. We have seen the inability of health services to operate in highly developed countries. We saw coffins on trucks. In addition, we have heard about the difficult decisions of doctors and the dilemmas of who to save and who not to – he says.

– Lockdown at this point was the only rational solution. This allowed us to reduce the number of infections and gave us time to prepare the health service to fight, he says. As he points out in an interview with money.pl, “today we know the virus better”. – We know more about his virulence, he himself has evolved along the way. We have hospital equipment, we have developed solutions and a strategy that assumes weighing the risk – he argues.

And, she emphasizes, the possible effects of the re-closure of the economy and the detention of children at home are also important.

– The cost of keeping children at home today is a greater risk than possible infections in schools. I am thinking primarily of the mental and development costs of children. We should also remember that the economy must function. The health service only works when there are funds to finance it – he adds.

The record unemployment rate was recorded in the Szydłowiec poviat in the Mazowieckie voivodship, where it was as much as 24.5 percent.

Unemployment map. The record was broken in Mazovia

And a similar opinion is presented by independent experts. According to Dr. Michał Sutkowski from the College of Family Physicians in an interview with money.pl, knowledge about the virus has changed.

– In a situation where we see pictures from China, and then from southern Europe, it is difficult to react otherwise. Everyone realized that it could be a bit too exaggerated, a bit too radical, but there was simply no other option – he explains.

– Today we not only know about the virus, but also proven methods to minimize its strength. He is still dangerous, we still have to take care of ourselves, but modern medicine comes to our aid in many places – he adds. And as he emphasizes, we often look at “lockdown” in zero-one, black and white categories.

– Some form of “lockdown” is still ongoing. We still have to keep our distance, we still have to take care of hygiene, we should still have our mouth and nose covered in many places. Unfortunately, however, the world does not end with the coronavirus, you need to treat other diseases, you need to function efficiently. This is a challenge that we have to face at the moment – he adds.
