Fabio Jakobsen speaks for the first time since his heavy crash at the Tour of Poland: “I’m really grateful to be alive”

During the sprint of the first stage of the Tour of Poland, Jakobsen passed Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma) on the right when the latter pushed him, sending Jakobsen into the barriers. The Deceuninck-Quick Step runner suffers from multiple fractures to his face and had to be placed in a coma for two days.

“The doctors and nurses in Katowice saved my life and I am grateful to them. I was operated on for five hours and it gave me a chance to stay alive. It was a difficult time for me at the intensive care because I was afraid of not surviving, ”Jakobsen said.

Since last Wednesday, the Dutchman left Poland and was transferred to Leiden hospital in the Netherlands before finally being able to return home. “I need a lot of rest after a big concussion. In the next few weeks and months, I will have to have some operations and other treatments for my facial injuries.”

“I am really grateful to be alive. All the messages I have received have given me strength. I can slowly look to the future and I will fight to recover,” Jakobsen concluded.
