“The trauma doctors, doctors and nurses at the finish line in Katowice saved my life for which I am extremely grateful to them.” This is what cyclist Fabio Jakobsen from Heukelum says, two weeks after his crash in the Tour of Poland, on the website of his team Deceuninck-Quikstep.

Jakobsen crashed hard in the bunch sprint at a speed of about 80 km / h due to a wrong maneuver by fellow countryman Dylan Groenewegen. He was operated on for five hours and was put in an artificial coma for several days.
‘Fear of not surviving’
“I spent a week in the intensive care unit (ICU) at St. Barbara hospital in Sosnowiec. It was a difficult, dark period for me in the ICU, where I had the fear of not surviving,” says Jakobsen to. “The organization behind the Tour de Pologne and my team have allowed my family to be close to me, which has given me a lot of strength.”
‘More operations’
Last Wednesday, the 23-year-old sprinter was transferred to the Leiden University Medical Center. He was further treated there in the ENT department. “Step by step I can start living more independently. At the moment I am at home, where the injuries in my face and injuries can continue to recover. In addition, I have to rest a lot in the coming months due to a major concussion. In the coming weeks and months I will have several more undergoing surgery and treatments to repair facial injuries. “
Jakobsen says he is very grateful that he is still alive. “All the messages and statements of support have given me a lot of strength. Step by step I can slowly look to the future, and I will fight to recover.”
