Verstappen Trusts Instincts, Overrides Team on Setup for Historic Monza Pole
Monza, Italy – Max Verstappen secured a stunning pole position for the italian Grand Prix, not only dominating qualifying but also shattering the track record and setting a new Formula 1 record for highest average speed in a lap. However, the victory wasn’t simply down to driver skill; it was a testament to Verstappen’s conviction and willingness to go against the grain within his own team.
The Red Bull driver revealed after qualifying that he pushed for specific car settings despite internal disagreement, a gamble that ultimately paid off. while Red Bull has enjoyed a period of dominance, recent races have seen McLaren close the gap, making Verstappen’s fifth pole of the season all the more extraordinary.
“Before qualifying, some people in the team wanted to try something different on the settings side, but I said that we should not do that,” Verstappen told Dutch journalists, as quoted by Motorsport. “When I whent to my room, I still saw that several people where dissatisfied with the selection of settings. However,I felt that we needed it,and this was fortunately.”
The disagreement centered around aerodynamic configuration, with key red Bull technical figure Pierre Wache reportedly favoring a larger wing for increased stability. According to De Telegraaf, Wache believed a smaller wing would result in greater time losses during qualifying, advocating for a setup geared towards the race.
Verstappen, however, trusted his instincts.”Ultimately, these decisions are made with many people, including GP and a few other people,” he explained. “Of course, I understand why some questions are asked and why others prefer a different direction. Only ultimately I sit in the car and feel some things. And this time I felt that a few small changes should be made that would make it better.”
His confidence was palpable over the team radio after securing pole, exclaiming, “Yes Sir! Unbelievable. Great, really great job. And it worked! Relax, everything is okay!”
This incident highlights the crucial role a driver plays in modern Formula 1, extending beyond simply executing the team’s strategy. Verstappen’s ability to articulate his needs and advocate for his preferred setup proved decisive in Monza, setting the stage for a potentially thrilling Italian Grand Prix.
