F1 smells danger and opens an investigation into engines

Suddenly a lot of things happen in Formula 1 when it comes to the engines. Last week, it became clear that the FIA plans to ban qualifying mode. Just before that, all four engine suppliers were already ordered to send data from the engine.

To be precise, the FIA has requested data from the ERS systems of Mercedes, Honda, Renault and Ferrari. The ERS system of a motor, which stands for Energy Recovery System, consists of the MGU-H and MGU-K, which convert heat (H) and kinetic energy into electricity and thus horse power.

At the beginning of August, the engine suppliers were told by means of a technical directive that they must upload all data from the ERS systems to the server of the FIA before 21 August (Friday), the German reports. Auto Motor and Sport. The global motorsport association thinks that one or more engine suppliers is cheating.

The engine suppliers could possibly manipulate measurements concerning energy management. That way, the MGU-K could provide more than the 163 horsepower allowed.

Engine suppliers must provide all design drawings and CAD data to the FIA. If this is not enough, the FIA can carry out technical checks, all engine suppliers are asked to prepare themselves for this.

In the technical directive, the FIA once again emphasizes cheating with measurements is a serious violation of the rules. Ferrari reportedly cheated last year with the measurements of the fuel flow, which measures how much fuel is going to the engine.
